The Joys of Writing xo

meI started my blog last fall and until now I didn’t really know how to build a following. I still don’t even know half of the functions on WordPress. I just began writing some stuff that interested me in hopes that my message of love and inspiration would reach some fellow writers and maybe I might get a few likes here and there. Now, after almost a year I’ve realised one very important thing:

It doesn’t matter how many likes or followers I get… what matters is my love of writing ❤

I have noticed that most of my face book friends don’t usually read my blog. YOU read my blog and that’s what makes connecting with bloggers so much fun! You may not know who I am on a personal basis, but you read my words and get a small glimpse into my writing journey. You know me for my most important quality: my hopes and dreams for the future. I am a dreamer.

I am on a journey that was meant to be ever since I was a little kid and you get to follow me through the joys and wonders of my writing.

I’ve been constantly posting links to my blog through my face book page and inviting people to join. I have personally asked friends and family members to follow and see what I’ve been up to. But, all of my followers on my blog are complete strangers. I don’t know anyone personally and I may never even know what you look like… and that doesn’t matter.

The most crucial thing about this whole experience is to enjoy what I am doing. After years of not writing anything… I am finally writing again AND LOVING IT!! Having a blog is so wonderful and I’m very much loving every minute of it. Reading what others have to say and following their journey as well as sharing my own… it’s fascinating.

Writing is a part of me! And I thank all of you for following 🙂

The right people will follow and encourage me if I just stick with this feeling of love. My love for writing ❤ It is an honor to share my thoughts and feelings with those on a similar path and that is all that matters in the end.

And so I leave you with some inspirational quotes from the great Robin Williams xo may he R.I.P.

From Dead Poets Society:

John Keating: “We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, “O me! O life!… of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless… of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?” Answer. That you are here – that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?”

“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.”

“Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. Thoreau said, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation.” Don’t be resigned to that. Break out!’

“Carpe diem, seize the day. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.”

Happy Friday xo May your weekend be full of love and joy!

Thursday Thoughts: On Death

Angel_of_Death_wallpaper03~This journey to becoming a writer is uncovering the many layers of my mind. Some of those layers are very dark and sometimes disturbing.

I’ve unfortunately experienced a lot of death in my life so maybe that’s why I have such morbid thoughts from time to time. I think about how death might feel. I have dreams of people dying and murdering each other on occasion. I even died in a dream once and when I woke up… I thought I had been reincarnated into a different body. It was really weird… and scary!

They say you’re not supposed to die in your dreams… because then you die in real life. Well I made it out of that dream to tell the tales of my dark mind. Don’t get me wrong though, I am not a dark person with dark tendencies. I’ve always been very happy and positive. But with my past experiences my mind just goes bleak and brooding at times. Creativity feeds on those feelings and it is where my inspiration develops. That’s why I based the novel I’m currently writing on death and the afterlife.

My first experience with death happened when I was just 9 years old. My Uncle Mike committed suicide by inhaling exhaust fumes. He put the exhaust pipe inside his car and then fell asleep never to wake again.  Strangely enough, 2 years later my cousin Mike was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident. I was still too young to know what death really was… I didn’t know how to feel or how to react.

What happens when we die? Is there a place we all go to live out the rest of eternity in peace? Is there actually a heaven and hell to separate the bad from the good? Or… does everything just go black? Do we disappear into nothing?

Surprisingly, I don’t fear death at all. In fact… death intrigues me. I am fascinated by it.

What does it feel like? I ponder this question constantly.

I’ve had 10 relatives pass away from old age and health issues over the years. But, the deaths that really get to me… are my young friends.

6 of my friends have died in the last 10 years. From drug overdose, drowning, heart attack and from the deepest of sleeps never to awaken. They were all too young to be taken away from this earth.

I have come to the realisation that death is to be a big part of my life. Death teaches me to be strong and empathetic. I know the sorrows of death too well.

But what about death itself. The mystery behind this awful… yet inevitable occurrence.  What happens to us when we die?

Since I’ve had so many people die in my lifetime I can not believe that everything goes black. Our spirits… our minds… they can’t just vanish into thin air. Can they?

I truly believe that spirits float on and protect the living… kind of like guardian angels I guess. I feel like my loved ones are watching over me from somewhere. Maybe not “heaven” so to speak but, they are out there. I can feel them. I will never forget them nor do I ever want to.

So, what are your thoughts on death? Do you believe in an afterlife? Do we all just disappear? Does death scare you? Or does it intrigue you?

I guess we will all find out one day… until then, may you live in peace and happiness xo And to those who have moved on from this earth…

May you rest in peace.

Here’s to my dear departed friends Philip, Nigel, Jackie, Daniel, Jayme and Zoe ❤ I love and miss you my friends… wherever you may be.

~Stories of a solo traveller~ The Barry Ashworth Experience

~48 Hours of Fame in Aguas Calientes, Mexico with Barry Ashworth-

My favorite Dub Pistol

Barry Ashworth

By: Tanya Brooks

My flight to Puerta Vallarta was delayed by 5 hours. The airport was full of angry frustrated faces and two babies were crying in unison. I had just begun my long journey to the center of Mexico to go meet my best friend Lisa in Aguas Calientes. We would arrive there at different times so I was solo for the first part of my trip. Lisa had some connections from previously living in Mexico and also from being a wicked cool Dj, so she managed to set up a gig with a friend of ours from Mexico, Arturo. He was throwing a huge party with some other music production people in the city and I had my “in” since Lisa is my best friend. I was to be a part of it all!

The special guest was Mr. Barry Ashworth from the infamous Dub Pistols! Don’t know who the Dub Pistols and Barry Ashworth are?

“Dub Pistols are a London based dub music, hip hop and big beat band founded by Barry Ashworth in 1996. The other members of the band were record producer and bassist Jason O’Bryan, Brooklyn producer and lyricist, T. K. Lawrence on vocals, Jap Slut guitarist John King, and DJ Stix / Steve Hunt. Guest songwriters and vocalists include Blade, James Dewes Sheffield (JMS), Rodney King and Terry Hall. In 2008 Jack Cowens joined the band on drums.”

Thanks, Wikipedia!

We were totally stoked! This was the plan:

I was to arrive in Sayulita by bus from PVmexico

stay there with our friend Nuri for two nights and then catch a 10-hour bus ride from Puerta Vallarta to Aguas Calientes. Arturo was then supposed to pick me up from the bus station and get me a hotel room. Barry was to be picked up from the Airport in Aguas the next day while Lisa was coming into a different airport around the same time. Then we would put together the party, entertain Barry and Lisa would stay in the hotel with me for a few nights. Seemed like it would be pretty easy to coordinate.

Well, as I was saying in the beginning:

my flight was delayed 5 hours from Vancouver so I didn’t arrive in Sayulita until late at night. I ended up sleeping most of the time I was there. I did manage to hit the beach for a few hours but didn’t see too much sun. After the next day’s bus ride, which took a grueling 10 hours… in this direction:

Arturo finally picked me up in Aguas Calientes… but didn’t have a room for me.

The trip started out just wonderful.

Finally, after 3 places denied us, we found a room on the complete opposite side of Aguas Calientes from where I was supposed to be. The rest of the plan worked out pretty well, though. The following night my chaperone drove me to the airport to get Barry. He was flying in from The UK. IMG_0902

We met up with Lisa and went out on the town. That’s when the fun began! 🙂

Barry’s face was all over Aguas Calientes. We saw posters and big huge banners as we walked around from place to place. People kept looking over at us and pointing. Suddenly as we entered Yambak (the bar hosting the show) locals started taking pictures of us and tapping us on the shoulder to get a look at Barry. I felt a soft touch on my arm as we sat down with our beers and I turned around to see an Asian girl standing next to me.

“Can we have a photo?” she asked with a huge grin on her face.

She must have thought I was Barry’s agent or something. All of a sudden a line up of people formed around us as more and more locals joined in our spontaneous photo shoot with Barry. People were laughing at clapping and shaking Barry’s hand. Some people didn’t even know who he was but they saw his blown up face on a huge banner outside the bar so they just had to get in on the action. I think Barry probably signed some autographs that night too. It was so much fun!

IMG_0908 IMG_0904 IMG_0907 IMG_0905

Bright flashes and big crowds engulfed us as we struck a pose and boasted about the upcoming show. Everyone was so excited and I felt like a total rock star! As the warm air saturated my skin the sweat started to drip down my face. Hours had eventually gone by and we were getting pretty exhausted. Lisa and I started discussing the ride situation to get back to our room and Barry overheard our dilemma.

He kindly offered us a place to stay in the king sized bed in his big huge hotel room… which was much nicer than ours AND right down the street from where the party was going to be. So the next day we moved in with Barry and the three of us crashed in the gigantic bed. Barry was an absolute gentleman and a riot too. He was so fun and energetic. All we did was laugh and have fun with him. It didn’t matter where we were we stuck together and made the trip one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. We even managed to go see a bit of the city and grab a few trinkets along the way.

IMG_0910 IMG_0914 IMG_0918

Then, before we knew it… it was time to PARTY!

Armed with our backstage passes we dressed up and pulled our dancing shoes on!IMG_0929

We grabbed a couple of drinks while people started showing up and the stage slowly started making some noise. A bit of background Mariachi music played while the sound system was being tested.

The first DJ was on, pounding some heavy bass and people started bobbing their heads and moving around.

Then… the lights came on for Barry!

As soon as the announcer introduced Barry, the entire place went crazy! Strobe lights were pulsing, people’s hands were in the air and Barry instantly destroyed the decks! Pure joy pulsated through my veins as Barry threw on:

“Mucky Weekend” 2012- from Worshipping the Dollar

Lisa and I looked at each other and began screaming the lyrics at the tops of our lungs while we ripped up the backstage with our killer moves and flailed around howling up towards the stars.

“Oh, no here we go again,
I’m off my face another mucky weekend
One day I’m gonna have some kids and a wife
But until then I just wanna live my life.”

Barry blew everyone away with his sweet tracks and epic mixes that dropped atomic bombs!! IMG_0947

We jumped up on stage to bust a move as Barry grabbed a bottle of Vodka, took a swig and then spit it all over the crowd. The IMG_0958smoke machine intensified the drops of liquid spraying out onto the dance floor making them look like little beads falling from the sky. IMG_0961

We danced until we couldn’t dance anymore. The night was a hit. So much fun… so many memories.

The following day we just relaxed and recouped from the night’s festivities. After a short run in with a weird after party in the wee hours of the morning and a snippy little dog that almost chewed Barry’s leg off… we managed to get some rest. Other than some ripped pants no one was hurt in the party process 🙂

Barry became an automatic awesome good friend and I am so lucky to have met him.

He even came over to Victoria recently to do a small show here at Rehab bar after his big Canadian tour!

My tiny tribute to one of the greats! RIP Robin Williams xo

rw~Robin Williams will forever be one of my favorite actors and probably one the greatest actors who ever lived.~

Some people seem upset that his death is getting so much coverage. This always seems to happen when a celebrity passes. But why? How come there is such an uproar? How can you compare the destruction of an entire planet to one persons death? How could anyone say that he went out like a coward?

Well if that’s your perspective on this horrible event… than you should probably drive your head into some dirt like this giraffe here…giraffe head in sand

and wait until the dust settles. Because all of the deep love, devotion and grieving by his many beloved followers and fans is well deserved.

So what, you want people to stop talking about Robin Williams and continue talking about the civil war in Syria or the horrible chemical blanket that is about to consume us all? Then what? What are you going to do to stop these things from happening? How many of those people complaining just sit back and watch everything go to hell without EVER doing anything about it? Where does YOUR imprint on the world lie??

Well, Robin Williams imprint on the world is this: he dedicated his life to making other people happy. He struggled in silence and yet, continued to help others laugh and forget about all the bad in the world… even if it was for a brief moment in time. Because that’s all life is. It’s what we make of it. It saddens me to see that another great mind has been taken by mental illness. It scares me to think that such a genius… such a brilliant person was consumed by despair as so many others are. Where did everything go so wrong?

How can so many people suffer all at once and then disregard someone who was so incredibly amazing? To those people… I say shame on you.

I will always remember Robin Williams for his greatness. His intensity. His strength. imagesUTWVGETC

As time fades away the only beauty that comes from death is our memories of the departed. Robin Williams’ beautiful soul will live on in our hearts forever. I will be forever grateful that I grew up watching all of his movies and that I developed a love for him even though he never knew who I was. As someone who suffers from anxiety and depression myself, I commend Robin Williams for persevering as long as he did. I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it must be to suffer so much and also be in the public eye. To be a superstar in pain. That feeling must be awful.

So here’s to you Mr. Robin Williams. May you suffer no more. And may you rest in peace… because YOU made the world a better place. ❤ I’ll always love you.robin williams 2

A legacy left behind. Robin McLaurin Williams (July 21, 1951 – August 11, 2014)

I leave you with a few quotes from some of my favorite movies in memory of a great man:

What dreams may come (1998): That’s when I realized I’m part of the problem. Not because I remind you. But because I couldn’t join you. So I left you alone. Don’t give up, okay?

Sometimes, when you win, you lose. images0AFNIYRX

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993): Daniel: Did you ever wish you could sometimes freeze frame a moment in your day, look at it and say “this is not my life”?

Mrs. Doubtfire: [reading a letter] “Dear Mrs. Doubtfire, two months ago, my mom and dad decided to separate. Now they live in different houses. My brother Andrew says that we aren’t to be a family anymore. Is this true? Did I lose my family? Is there anything I can do to get my parents back together? Sincerely, Katie McCormick.” Oh, my dear Katie. You know, some parents, when they’re angry, they get along much better when they don’t live together. They don’t fight all the time, and they can become better people, and much better mummies and daddies for you. And sometimes they get back together. And sometimes they don’t, dear. And if they don’t, don’t blame yourself. Just because they don’t love each other anymore, doesn’t mean that they don’t love you. There are all sorts of different families, Katie. Some families have one mommy, some families have one daddy, or two families. And some children live with their uncle or aunt. Some live with their grandparents, and some children live with foster parents. And some live in separate homes, in separate neighborhoods, in different areas of the country – and they may not see each other for days, or weeks, months… even years at a time. But if there’s love, dear… those are the ties that bind, and you’ll have a family in your heart, forever. All my love to you, poppet, you’re going to be all right… bye-bye. robin-williams-mrs-doubtfire
