Enjoy!

The modern business world pressures us to be workaholics while glamorizing the habit of staying busy as if it were an art form. Perhaps this is why so many entrepreneurs, freelancers and businesses professionals find themselves craving work-life balance. Some people have started to believe that work-life balance in modern society is actually just a myth. Speaking from experience, it’s very possible to achieve a healthy balance between work and personal time; we’ve just been going about it all wrong. As a society, we talk about “finding” work-life balance as if all we have to do is walk into a room and simply look for it. Instead of expecting the work-life balance to be an effortless task, we must actively change habits and shift priorities to build the happy, fulfilling life we’ve dreamed of.

If your New Year’s Resolution is to find more balance, here are some changes you can make today to start working towards your goal:

Unplug

I know, I know, you’ve heard it so many times before. Here’s why…

Unplugging (turning off the computer and putting down your phone) is important for us to do on a regular basis. In addition to improving work-life balance, studies have shown it has actual health benefits for the human body. Give your brain a rest, reduce stress and anxiety, sleep better, and get back to enjoying the moment.

Schedule It
If you’re having trouble finding time to unplug, try scheduling it on your calendar like you would for any other task. This holds true for ME time, exercise, self-care time, or any activities that will make you feel less stressed about work.

Start Small
When you first start to prioritize yourself, it can feel strange. If you’re finding it difficult or even shameful to pull yourself away from important projects and deadlines for the sake of reading a book or relaxing with friends, here’s a tip that might help. Start small. Instead of scheduling a whole hour for self-care time, try blocking off a smaller window of time. The length of time is up to you. What feels realistic to you today? Even if you start with just five minutes per day, you will eventually start to feel the benefits – and you can always work your way up from there.

Shift Your Perspective
Instead of beating yourself up for the things you didn’t accomplish by the end of the day, start re-training your brain to focus on positivity. Business coach and former Google employee Jenny Blake offers the following advice: At the end of your workday, create a list of everything you did accomplish that day, even if it was only chipping away at a much larger project.

Work-life balance isn’t something that can be found because it isn’t something that just magically happens. You have to prioritize it and work for it, just like anything else in life. It may feel strange scheduling time for yourself at first. You may even feel a little guilty not checking your work emails. Over time, however, you’ll start to find that you’re less burnt out and more productive at work because you’ve created some healthy boundaries and prioritized your own well-being. Optimizing your home for stress-free living wouldn’t hurt either. You get enough stress from work.

You certainly don’t need your place of living to add to that.

~Doing What We Have To Do~

~Sometimes doing what we love or doing what we want isn’t in the cards. Sometimes doing what we have to do is what we must do… right now. I came to this realization after finishing school in April.

I was completely broke. I hadn’t had a full-time job in over a year and moving into a more expensive living situation started eating up my savings.  I desperately wanted to start my business and I gave it a good try for about a month, but I decided I had to put my dreams on hold to make money. So that’s what I did all summer: I made money.

I haven’t been writing on my blog and I’ve gone silent on my social media accounts over the last few months. I needed a full-time job and that’s exactly what I got. I gave up most of my summer to work every day to try to push myself ahead once again. In just 3 months, I worked my way into a front desk manager position at my office after the previous manager walked out. I was suddenly it.

So I owned it.

I looked at my situation and said to myself, “Just do it!” I buckled down and worked my entire summer away. I took responsibility and proved myself worthy of the workload.

Starting a business is a lot of work. More work than I was willing to put in with the amount of money I had; which was next to nothing. I did the research and discovered I wasn’t ready at all. I didn’t have the time or the money and I knew right away it wasn’t going to work out. Which in the grander scheme of things is just fine with me. I don’t want to rush into something that I’m not ready for. Don’t get me wrong; I love writing and I still have every intention of starting my travel website, but only when the time is right.

My new job took up all of my energy. I was mentally drained after long days of training new people, working in a very busy office and picking up the pieces of the previous employees who had left a big mess behind. I had absolutely no mental capacity to sit down and write what I wanted to write. I only took two weeks to go have some summer fun with my boyfriend and that was the only time I had off. We did a mini road trip through the Kootenays, hit up Shambhala Music Festival and went camping beside a gorgeous waterfall beside a beautiful lake. It was pretty awesome!

I chose to do what I had to do. Doing what we have to do is not always what we want to do, but I am happy with my decision. Life is full of choices and I chose to work full-time to better my money situation before starting something much bigger.

I’m still young. I still have so much time to do what I want 🙂 And so this minor setback is actually not a setback at all. It’s just a bit of a detour on my life long journey to get to where I want to be. I will still travel. I will still write. I will do what I want to do eventually when the time is right.

Right now I’m doing what I have to do and I’m ok with that. I like my job and the people who work in my office so working towards my dreams by putting them on hold for now is not such a bad thing.

It’s just what I have to do 🙂 Staying hopeful, keeping positive and still enjoying life. That’s what life is all about, right?!

Thursday Thoughts: On Blogging 201

abstract-316309_1280This morning is just an awful, wet and miserably rainy Thursday morning, which is perfect for someone who has nothing to do but work on writing assignments. 🙂 OK I’m lying… I have dishes and cleaning to do, but who wants to do that stuff?

Last week I signed up for Blogging 201, offered by The Daily Post, along with a bunch of other wonderful bloggers who want to improve their websites. It’s been a fantastic way to meet some new people on the same path as I am, and I’m learning a great deal of information from this free course.

The first three tasks were as follows:

Write down 3 short-term goals for my blog
Audit my brand
Get read all over; mobile devices and responsive layout

My goals for my toddler blog were to double my followers by next spring, have my first guest post by the end of this month and to make an Editorial Calendar. My follower count is continuously growing which I’m incredibly excited about and I’ve gained more than 20 new followers just from the interactions through Bloggers University over the last few days. Whoo hoo!

I have my beautiful blogger friend Erin writing my blogs first guest post for Monday 🙂 So stay tuned for that awesomeness!!

Making an editorial calendar is definitely something I struggle with because all I want to do is work on my blog, BUT I am also writing a novel which needs to fit into my schedule somewhere. I’ve noticed my stats are still very inconsistent as I’ve only just begun to build my blog over the last 3 months. I do see that most of my followers love my posts about writing so I’m going to stick with my current schedule: Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays… with the occasional random post on another day since I love blogging.

My brand? Well everything that has to do with tiny things… like me! I’m a tiny person so I branded myself The Tiny Writer right off the bat. I went through my entire blog and made sure everything was consistent with this. I write about tiny things and tiny accomplishments throughout my blog and it relays my sole purpose of the blog all together: to inspire others with tiny baby steps through writing and through life. What do you think? Does this brand work for me?

I’ve changed my blog to a Responsive Layout by changing the theme and adding better quality photos which helps when people are accessing my site on a mobile device.

On a side note: I’ve been learning about Copyright laws as well and have read a few stories on how bloggers can be penalized and/or sued by using pictures that are protected by copyright laws, which worried me a bit as I was using Google images for some of my pictures. Since reading these stories I have revamped my whole blog removing a whole whack of pics and replacing them with pics from FREE to use websites such as Pixabay, which is my favorite one so far. I’ve also added a bunch of my favorite Instagram photos I took myself.

So if you have noticed my blog looking different lately, these are the reasons why: I’m going for the best look, the most traffic and the easiest way to optimize.
What are your thoughts on the new changes?

I’d love to hear some feedback from my followers. 🙂
